USAT Liberty Wreck Tulamben: History Meets Reef
A wartime ship became a reef, and one of Bali’s most famous dive sites is much more than steel underwater.
Tulamben, north-east coast
A wreck that has kept growing for decades.
USAT Liberty was torpedoed during the Second World War, later brought to the coast and now rests in the water off Tulamben. Coral, sponges and schooling fish have turned steel into a complex habitat.
Its appeal is not one photo angle. Light passes through openings, silhouettes move across covered beams and black volcanic sand begins at the edges.

Diving the Liberty wreck

The practical dive
From pebble shore to wreck panorama.
The drive from Padang Bai follows the east coast. Tulamben entries cross coarse pebbles. Water may deepen after only a few steps; surf, balance and a controlled buddy routine matter more than speed. Local helpers assist with cylinders.
Entry
Sturdy booties protect on pebbles. Mask and regulator are ready in good time; fins are put on under control in the water. Tell the guide before entry if balance is difficult.
Route
The wreck offers shallow and deeper sections. Route and maximum depth follow certification, gas use, visibility, group and daily conditions. A dive need not circle the entire wreck.
Surface interval
Hydration, shade, light food and an honest thermal check belong between dives. Black stone becomes hot; sandals and a towel help.
Exit
The final metres over rolling pebbles deserve attention. Regulator stays in, mask stays on and buddies remain close until both stand securely.

Before your first wreck dive
Can an Open Water Diver dive the Liberty?
Suitable exterior areas may be possible depending on recent experience, certification limits, route and daily conditions. Depth and more demanding sections remain within the relevant training.
Is a night dive possible?
Only with individual planning, suitable experience, local logistics and current rules. It is not an automatic part of a day trip.
Can divers enter the wreck?
Penetration requires specialist training, redundant planning and a suitable route. Normal guided recreational dives observe the structure from outside.
