Manta Point & Nusa Penida: Safe, Respectful Diving
A manta wing above you is unforgettable. A good dive day begins long before the sighting.
A real encounter
A manta chooses how close it comes.
Authentic project footage—never staged or baited.
Manta ray above a diver
Stay calm, breathe gently and keep distance: proximity without pursuit.
An island of channels
Nusa Penida is not one dive site.
Around Penida and Lembongan lie sheltered coastal sections, current edges, deep channels and famous Manta Point. Tides move large volumes of water through the Lombok Strait system. This creates extraordinary drift dives and demands site selection that respects experience and live conditions.
The boat and surface are part of the dive
Swell and wind can make entries and exits more demanding. Tell us in advance if you become seasick easily or feel uncertain on open boats.
Cold sometimes arrives in layers
Thermoclines can be striking. Suitable exposure protection, a hood for cold-sensitive divers and ending the dive promptly beat shivering for a photograph.
Current is more than speed
Direction, vertical components, eddies, exit options and boat pickup are assessed. The group remains compact; an SMB belongs in experienced hands.
Self-check
Is a Penida day right for you now?
Choose your current situation honestly, not ambitiously.
Penida can enter the plan.
You dive regularly, stay calm in drifts, control ascent and gas and can apply instructions immediately.
- Recent experience
- Reliable buoyancy
- Calm boat routines
- Accept an alternative site
Begin locally and rebuild confidence.
A check or refresher day in Padang Bai shows how equipment, buoyancy and gas use feel today.
- Refresh skills
- Guide learns how you dive
- Test thermal protection
- Reassess Penida afterward
Calm matters more than the card.
A new Open Water Diver can begin on more sheltered reefs. Penida follows only when behaviour and conditions genuinely fit.
- No automatic green light
- Respect depth and current
- Small steps
- Manta is not compulsory
Discuss route, protection and alternatives.
Severe nausea or cold increases stress. We discuss boat, suit, timing and an equally worthwhile alternative if needed.
- Check medication medically
- More insulation
- Light meal
- Alternative without embarrassment
Manta etiquette
The cleaning station belongs to the animals.
Mantas circle structures where small fish remove parasites. Divers remain outside, never approach from above and do not block paths. Calm waiting often creates more than swimming after them.
- Keep the distance given in the briefing
- Do not hover over the station
- Keep strobes and camera out of the way
- Never touch or feed

When no mantas appear
Why the dive can still be excellent.
Manta Point has rock landscapes, blue water, smaller reef residents and a distinctive atmosphere. Other Penida sites bring drifts, coral slopes and fish life. Nature travel improves when expectation stays curious rather than demanding.
Do not chase live reports
A report from this morning is not an appointment for the afternoon. Animals move and conditions change.
A safe abort is a professional decision
If swell, current or comfort do not fit, a change is not failure. It shows that safety comes before marketing.
The memory is larger than the proof photo
Hold the camera close occasionally, watch flight, light and water and share the space with your buddy.

Penida FAQ
Before making the decision
Are mantas present year-round?
Encounters are possible at different times but never guaranteed. Season, food and daily conditions influence opportunities.
How cold can it get?
Thermoclines can be considerably cooler than surface water. We recommend exposure protection according to dates and personal sensitivity.
Can a beginner visit Manta Point?
Only when certification, current water competence and daily conditions fit. A local assessment dive may be useful or required first.
