The weight question
What belongs in carry-on?
Valuable, delicate or essential items belong in carry-on where airline rules allow: regulator, computer, mask, camera, batteries, medication, documents and one change of clothes. Knives, tools, liquids and large metal parts may face security restrictions.
Lithium batteries
Spare batteries and power banks generally travel in carry-on with terminals protected. Watt-hour and quantity limits differ. The airline and departure airport on the travel date are authoritative.
Regulator and computer
Pressure-sensitive and expensive components are better protected in carry-on. A computer is never swapped between people during a dive series.
Wetsuit and BCD
When weight is tight, suit and BCD can be rented. Mask and computer offer the greatest personal comfort for relatively little baggage.
Camera
Store the housing without a fitted O-ring if the manufacturer recommends it; keep seals clean and uncompressed. First assembly happens calmly ashore, not hurriedly on the boat.

Rental gear and inclusions are confirmed before travel.
Tulamben special
Booties are small—and golden on pebbles.
Many Tulamben entries cross coarse moving pebbles. Sturdy booties with a useful sole provide protection and grip. Thin full-foot fins or soft socks are less comfortable there.
Do not practise walking in gear for the first time in surf; local helpers and your buddy assist.

What stays home
More equipment does not automatically mean more safety.
Untested spares, unfamiliar tools, oversized knives, lead weights and just-in-case gadgets increase weight and failure points. Bring only what you can operate, maintain and transport legally.
Weights and cylinders
These do not belong in flight luggage. Configurations are arranged locally.
Unnecessary single-use items
A refillable bottle, cloth bag and a few durable containers reduce waste.
Private valuables
Jewellery and irreplaceable objects fit poorly with boats, salt and hotel moves.
More than a dive plan
Bali begins between the dives.
An early harbour morning, rice fields in evening light and a quiet place by the sea belong to the journey just as much as the moment of descent.

Last questions before closing the case
Can I rent a full equipment set?
Yes, subject to availability and sizing. Unusual sizes, prescription masks and special configurations need early confirmation.
Do I need a 5 mm suit?
It depends on region, season, dive duration and cold sensitivity. More insulation can be helpful for Penida and cool thermoclines.
Can a dive light go in checked luggage?
Battery type, light construction and airline rules decide. Batteries require short-circuit protection and often belong in carry-on. Check the carrier’s current rule.
